Havana Syndrome and the mystery of microwave attack on the US diplomats
U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris was scheduled to fly to Hanoi, Vietnam, from Singapore on Aug 24, 2021. But that flight got delayed by several hours. The reason given for the delay was due to an “anomalous health incident.” (Source)
Not an isolated event
Surprisingly, the “anomalous health incident” had a lot of similarities to the so-called Havana syndrome that affected American and Canadian diplomatic personnel in Cuba in 2016–17, causing unusual, unexplained health problems.
The history of Havana Syndrome
Staff and many of their relatives living at the U.S. embassy in Havana in 2016–17 complained of symptoms ranging from dizziness, loss of balance, hearing loss, anxiety, and something they described as cognitive fog, which later came to be known as Havana Syndrome.
At that time, the U.S. accused Cuba of carrying out sonic attacks, which the Cuban government denied.
Later, a popular journal JAMA published their finding in 2018 that the diplomats experienced brain injury (Source). The reason at that time was not clear.
The Aftermath
The diplomatic tension between the U.S. and Cuba escalated when Cuba dismissed a report by the U.S. academic study which found brain abnormalities in the diplomats who had fallen ill.
Later, Canada cut its embassy staff in Cuba after at least 14 citizens reported similar symptoms.
The U.S. consulate in Guangzhou, China, also reported strange symptoms like: “subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure,” after which in 2018, the U.S. removed several officials from China (Source). One U.S. official was even diagnosed with mild brain trauma.
In fact, as recently as 2021, at least two U.S. officials stationed in Germany sought medical treatment after developing symptoms of the mysterious health complaint known as Havana Syndrome (Source).
The most plausible explanation
Interestingly, according to a report published in BBC on Dec 2020, A US report suggested that directed microwaves likely cause the Havana Syndrome. (Source).
A report by the National Academies of Sciences (USA) also said that research into the effects of pulsed radiofrequency energy was carried out by the Soviet Union more than 50 years ago. The report reads:
“The committee felt that many of the distinctive and acute signs, symptoms and observations reported by (government) employees are consistent with the effects of directed, pulsed radiofrequency (R.F.) energy.”
“Studies published in the open literature more than a half-century ago and over the subsequent decades by Western and Soviet sources provide circumstantial support for this possible mechanism.”
At present, the research into the possible cause for Havana Syndrome is still going on, with the BBC reporting in Sept 2021 that while the debate remains divisive, new evidence of directed microwaves is being considered as blood from patients is being collected and analyzed more systematically (Source).
After years of unexplained illnesses undermining American intelligence, the CIA announced last December that it would conduct a focused investigation on the phenomenon, led by senior officers within the agency and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.(Source)
Later, Biden’s CIA director William Burns confirmed this March that he vowed to redouble the effort.
